Kukua!!!

Living with 5 or 6 women does have its disadvantages. In fact, I think it only has disadvantages. One girl admitted today to having Seasonal Affect Disorder. Which is fine and dandy for the rest of us except that she called a ROOMATES' meeting to tell us all. There are so many feelings floating around you could swat them with a fly swatter. She wants to conduct a bitch session, now, once a week. In other words, she wants to meet once weekly to bitch about the living situation. She's also a girly lesbian what dresses like a bike dyke and despises guy folk. Needless to say, she's troubled with herself and her identity and feels it necessary to impose her degree of lost and confused on us all. But of course, the girls are all more than willing to jump on board and I'm corralled into our weekly cry and moan meetings. Not that I didn't suggest we do this thing monthly instead; just, our lost child needs all eyes on her once a week instead of once every full moon.

In other news, I'm really digging this Hawaiian pidgin. It's akin to Canadian, really. Today I sat in a medical office and listened to a guy throw "ehs" around like it was the Vancouver Winter Olympics (which just ended gloriously for the Maple Leaves up north). My favorite thing about Hawaii, however, is Bangkok Chef! Their yellow chicken curry is to die for with potatoes and white meat chicken and ginger and STICKY RICE! Best part? It's only $6.5o. I'd do it everyday if I could (which I can't, it's in Chinatown, far far away from my home in Makakilo by island standards).

As nice as all THAT is, I'm still looking forward to my next 3 visits to beautiful Canada (to visit my gal pal on the way back to New York, to grab my car in Montreal, and gal palling it again whilst attending Rifflandia 3 in September). I feel good. Good.

You guys do realize that O.J. is 60, right? Why O.J.? Did you all know that the woman who shot her preacher husband, and father of her kids, in the back did 7 months in prison? She did more time than O.J. did. You gotta chill man. Chill.

My dawg Maykin chilled with me yesterday. It's really odd that we haven't hung out in such a while (since one of his best friends bought the farm back in February) and we just caught up and shot the shit. Oh, the things we talked about. Exactly what you'd imagine two 27 year olds to talk about. Such masculine talk. Male bonding and all that good stuff.

Lastly, Asics just doesn't make any of the nice looking Tigers for men, do they? What gives? A jazzy pair of Mexico 66's right now could really hit the spot. Maybe if I do my best Schopenhauer impersonation, a pair in my size will magically appear at my doorstep.

Is it 7:30 yet?

Because I'm going crazy!

McDonald's. I can understand Apple advertising on VH1 and MTV. I can understand McDonald's advertising everywhere and on everything in the U.S.; the world even. What I can't grasp is why they'd feel the urge to advertise to the New York metro area that it's a test market for their new angus beef based hamburger. Not having looked at any empirical evidence to prove or disprove my thinking here, I must say the shit don't make sense. It just don't. I'd assume that New York City has got a higher per capita ratio of vegetarians than most other big cities here in the U.S. It's like every third person I meet (pardon the pun) is a fucking hard line vegetable consumer. Besides that, are New Yorkers big connoisseurs of beef? Like do we appreciate the difference between run of the mill beef and the angus kind? Chill homie. What really gets me curious is the fact that they run ads telling us that we're a test market. How does that make us want to buy the burger any more than just saying it's a superior burger? Is it a clever little ploy to introduce humor, and only a clever little ploy to introduce humor?

I'm in the process of finalizing some hiking plans for next weekend, but it seems my "company" is only tagging along to appease me. So this morning when I sent her the link to a website that rates and describes some great local hikes, I put it out there. It seemed utterly appropriate to ask someone, point blank, 'hey, you're not just going hiking to appease me?' Eh. If the person is just a nice person, of course she's going to say 'no' and feel awkward the whole trip. Last time we went hiking and to Pacem in Terris I started to play a Common tune on the old iPod and she asked 'who is this?' I told her who it was and said it's rap and she laughed hysterically. Which I thought was cool. She was having a laugh at my expense. People don't usually have the courage to do that in your face.

I'm putting a hurting on my body! I've pushed up until my arms won't stop trembling. Gotta start the crunches now.

So what's the deal with Dead Sea salt? I asked my mom to pick me up a sack when she goes to Israel in a couple months, but I can see myself getting the same results using Morton's sea salt to exfoliate, etc.

Speaking of foliate... hmmm, when does the foliage start to turn? That could make for an excellent hike.

Too much fucking writing.

I'm not a photographer

And those aren't cherry blossoms

Because they aren't. But they were awesome when I saw them in early April. I had to get off the train and get on the ground and snap some photos. It was probably the contrast because nothing else was starting to blossom at the time. It was a good time too. Things were going well. I had a job. I was waking up early and getting to my job early. I was meeting co workers and Koreans. I was drinking exotic "earthy" organic coffees. I was listening to various genres of music.

And now I sit at home. No job. Though I'm delighted to not have to go to work. And though I'm not an artist, I've decided to say I am and use it as a euphemism meaning "I'm unemployed." So, for now at least, "artist" = unemployed. And if you were to ever ask me what type of art it is that I do, I very simply, though coyly, retort "Oh, it's just too difficult to describe, you'll never get it," and swiftly make for the exit. What a contrast!

It's all about contrasts. And simple pleasures.

I'm building a nice cache of what it's all about here.

Today I'm feeling:

solemn

If I were to buy you the equivalent of a drink at this Internet lounge we find ourselves, what drink would that be?

And by the way, those really aren't cherry blossoms, and I'm really not a photographer. But they could be cherry blossoms?

If you...

If the George Washington Bridge wasn't so costly and congested...

If you don't find Spike Lee or Quentin Tarantino movies all that particularly good...

If you don't necessarily fancy having all that much money...

If you aren't too much of a fiction fan...

If you don't find it necessary to shower every single day...

If you find negativity practical as opposed to positivity, which you find unrealistic...

If you have a fondness for lip balm...

If you are not into hoarding...

And if you would rather not chew gum...

Then you and I are like... simpatico!

Busy day. Clean, tidy, repeat. The room looks bright and lovely.

When you rush me you get weak ass posts like this one. Bloggin' ain't a science or anything but it does take some care as to make sure there's at least something to entertain you all for 30 seconds. I try.

Get this! My friend from Kansas picked me up a tumbleweed while she was in New Mexico! Then, she shipped it from the Big Sunflower to the Big Apple to yours truly! It's sitting right here in my freshly painted room! Pimpin'!! Pictures, presumably, are to follow.

Be cool.

More from Sam's Point, NY

Today I stood up for my rights. I felt the spirit of Bob Marley coursing through my veins. I think the system felt the spirit of bureaucracy coursing through its annals. To be continued...

I met a Buddhist on Sunday and spoke with a quasi one for 4+ hours this morning. We (the Buddhists and I) seem highly compatible. My sheer ability to tolerate these two individuals for hours is proof positive enough. I've got a couple of readings to get through on the matter and we'll see if there is anything inspiring therein. 'Till then I'll continue my agnostic ways. I'm just saying...

That whole photo above just says "..." to me. It's a dreamer's photo, no? The sun, infinite landscape, and an inspiration provoking horizon give rise to the thought "go." I should attempt to legally change my name to the verb "To Go." Alas, there's a country in Africa called Togo. So that's a no go. Unless that's where I went. This is like that Robert Frost poem. Okay, I'm going to cut the dry babble short right here.

Happy birthday Su

Sukyung

The above pictured Korean is actually pretty fluent in English, as far as most of the Koreans I've come across recently go (and I've come across plenty, easily approaching 100 in the past couple years). She's also the workaholic that has me reevaluating the way I want to see and do things. But, just so you get the picture, she's holding up a Starbucks gift card, a cup of black iced coffee (with not even a half packet of sugar) with a 5" Vienna Moka "birthday" cake. The girl is wired for her 12 hour sessions at SVA's lab.

Happy Easter

Sculpture and view courtesy of the 6th Avenue sidewalk at Bryant Park, NYC

This game is inspiring! I mean the plot is superb. Most of us slaves will sympathize.

I bought some beer that you drink out of a champagne glass. It's a lambic infused with black cherry. They had the raspberry, peach, and black currant. I'd have preferred the cranberry, but I think I'll enjoy the one I got all the same.

Nothing interesting to report today. The idiots are taking a few hours off. The house still smells putrid. And I'm going to step out the door in about 30 minutes to hit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I hear it's immense and it'll take me the whole day and I still might not see it all. But... only in New York can you do a major museum on Easter Sunday!

Thoughts in solitude

Buenos Aires equivalent to the NYC "canyon"

Mother seems to really like ATL. It seems she'll strongly consider making a move. Not encouraging to me. Kind of selfish of me, but wondering in Williamsburg last night made me wish I could really live there with another friendly, slim and smiley body. We could walk and peruse the funky boutiques, eat a slice, and unwind at McCarren Park together. Yes, a bit haughty-toighty. But also not too far from eclectic either. I suppose there's an image trade-off of some sort. Not hipster/trust-funded but not project/ghetto either. Oy vey.

Today I'm feeling:

well

My body has some aching. And I can't seem to find a suitable activity/exercise for my first basic English class later this morning. But I'm well. Today you're feeling?

Happy 67th mom!

A New York state of mind

Condor at Sam's Point, New York

Had a terrible April Fool's Day. Got a ticket for unsafe riding on the J train. It comes with a $75 fine. Furthermore, it's frustrated me something serious. Shouldn't the police consider curtailing actual crime than someone who's just on the train to reach a destination?

Venezuela is in full effect! Arepas and hot chocolate from Hugo Chavez' home tried earnestly to soothe my seething soul. It helped.

Mother dearest is in the Dirty South for the next couple weeks. Maybe she'll return with some of that renowned hospitality.

Needless to say, I'm not soaring as high as the condor above is. Maybe it's time for a Redbull?

Today I'm feeling:

Que sera...

4th of July on Fire Island, NY

Francisco Zurbarán!! It just came to me whilst I wracked my brain since I left the Guggenheim to remember the name!! The man is good to say the least.

I may be mistaken, but the mailbox from this post has mysteriously returned to a plain old mailbox. Funky huh? Anyways, yesterday was the day of the big announcement (March 28th, checkout uspsjedimaster.com for details). But I noticed this from before Wednesday. Either I'm really observant, or just not as astute as I give myself credit for.

I just want to be on the court right now to bust a wicked crossover and clap it. I don't think my knee could handle the clapping right now though. Unless I get more proficient with the left so I could jump off my right knee.

Weakened since the weekend

As seen from the J train in Brooklyn at 6am

Coming to a close...

Just took this picture just for the sake of taking a picture and loved the way it came out. The weather is great, the Guggenheim was great, I'm highly anticipating the Met and the American Museum of Natural History (though the money to pay the admission is something I'd rather not part with) and I've come to the realization that many native New Yorkers don't do these things. Just the random thoughts in my mind. It took me 27 years of living in this city to finally appreciate the ability to just get up and go check these things out... when I know people who've come here from places like Korea, in part, to invest some time in MoMA and the Brooklyn Museum. Though I'm not making up for lost time, it feels good to invest some time in these endeavors.

I picked up a book on drawing at Strand earlier and am ready to dig into it.

The highlight of my week? How do you choose between sitting in an Upper East Side café with three great new friends, viewing some amazing Salvador Dalí works, eating crépes at 5am with fellow hungry, drunken club goers most of which were out of towners, and perusing Union Square with my Korean tutee? Maybe it was the smiles I got from the gorgeous Manhattanite I met at the top of Solomon's? Or listening to drunk ass John lie through his teeth to all these sexy ladies on the Lower East Side? (He pulled a cookie out of his pant pocket while talking to one girl and she flipped out. This is the same girl I later handed a Cadbury Creme Egg to, which I coincidentally pulled out of my jacket pocket). Crazy times in LuxembourgLand!

Today I'm feeling:

Canyon feel me?

6th Avenue on a clear March day

It's never wise to stop and smurf in the middle of a New York City avenue... but I couldn't resist the photo op. It's a canyon! I'm a permanent New York City tourist, and an artist! This weekend, I picked up a small sketch pad and some kind of sketching doohickies. Now I've got to hone my smurfs or something.

John had me going to the club again last night. I'm exhausted. This is ridiculous. Why am I even doing this shit? I guess there are more pictures of club chicks coming in subsequent posts. This guy is getting annoying. He's soooo pushy. But, I know how it feels to be away from home in a new town and not know anyone. John, you're a maniac though. You're a smurfin' maniac!

Today I'm feeling:

okay

Getting Plastered!!!

The best part about having an Irish name and being "born" on Saint Patrick's Day is that you've got more than one reason to get totally plastered for the siamese occasion.

I guess it wasn't all that bad that I didn't leap off from my photographic vantage point the other day. Besides, with all the snow on the ground, it might have just smarted.

Today I'm feeling:

like I'm going to have to marry Guinness.

Today I'll be too inebriated to be disheartened by the lack of commentary. So don't comment if you'd like and see if I care!

The agony of the feet

The gang at a Pizza Hut in Goshen, NY

Here I go posting my likeness again. Still, the focus was more on the chair backs than on the four faces!

Hikers we were, for a day, though far from the glorious kind. In the end, we were tired amateurs revelling in the glut of American prosperity. The sheer fact that we found ourselves in a Pizza Hut franchise minutes from our wooded seclusion speaks volumes to the girth with which many of our fellow citizens carry. Good times these are, if you can ignore the bad.

Today I'm feeling:

I have to work tomorrow, and Monday, and Tuesday, and next Thursday. It's like this shit never ends. Anyone care to commiserate?

Monday Magic

Creek somewhere in Ulster County, New York

Here in New York City, the mercury nearly breached the 60 mark. Exciting weather. It being March and all, and with the Daylight Savings thing in full swing, good times are on the horizon. Remember snow, there shouldn't be anymore of it to follow for the season. Soon, I'll be on the blacktop wearing out basketball sneakers by the pair.

Today I'm feeling:

It's been a long time since feeling half decent. How are you feeling? Tell me about it!

Paid the cost but ain't the boss

Illuminated Midtown building during a late February snowstorm, NYC 2007

Remember Rodney Dangerfield? The trademark bugged out eyes? The credo? "I tell ya, I gets no respect!" What made his brand of humor so appealing is the poignant relevance to our real lives. He made light of something that really hits home, far from the funny bone. Sometimes, when I give of myself I lack the insight to expect less in return. Therein lies the problem. I would certainly not be so nice, caring, reasonable, and benevolent if I knew the courtesy, even hypothetically, wouldn't be reciprocated. But it still surprises me every time I open a door for someone and don't hear "thank you." It still irks me when I say goodbye and get a resounding "click" in response. And it's most painful when you love someone and show it, especially when they'd like for you to do something with them, but wouldn't think twice about turning you down when you'd like them to do something with you. But then I have to take a couple steps back, sometimes to the side when my back's against the wall, and ask myself "why do I even try?" Why do I help, show up, come with, have come over, buy a snack or treat for, and sometimes just reassure others? Clearly, at some point, I'm only going to get snubbed. Why? Because one day someone is going to show me that appreciation in return and I just don't know who or when that is. So to that I say:

Be Prepared

Brooklyn!

Under the Brooklyn Bridge

"...How sweet it is."
Anonymous, on a sign posted when entering Brooklyn from the Verrazano Bridge.

Headed to the Brooklyn Museum later this evening. Just thought I'd give the blogosphere a small glimpse of the splendor of my hometown. If you look carefully, you can see that even in winter, a tree grows here. Along with lamp posts.

I'm currently rocking to Jimmy Crack Corn by Eminem featuring fiddy.
